On my easel...

On My Easel....
Yesterday was a great day in the studio.  I started a new painting and here is what I have after scrubbing shapes and color in.  I used a #12 Filbert all the way.  This painting is in an abstract stage, and it may stay that way....not sure.  Starting a new painting is always so much.  I can't wait to get in front of my easel today and work on this painting.  I want to the clouds to be dramatic and bold.  More on this painting tomorrow...Kay

Contemporary Equine Painting
This painting is signed and finished!
Fast, engergetic and bold expressive strokes give this contemporary painting interest.  I have completed it after months of painting...I went through many phases with this painting....being in love with it, hating it, working on it, talking about it, changing it, and now it is completed.  It is drying at the studio, and will ship to one of the galleries.  Today is the last day in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge --- be sure to go check out the paintings on Leslie Saeta's blog.  Contact Kay if you have any questions or comments on this painting.  KMW

Vying For Position

Vying For Position
11" x 14" Oil on Linen
Contemporary Equine Painting
This painting is completed after starting it months ago, and putting it aside when I got frustrated with the painting surface.  I used a fine linen, and it didn't have enough tooth or texture.  So I put it away and decided to pull it out earlier this month.  I have been working on cleaning up my work station at the studio, and pulled several painting out that are needing some attention.  Even though this is on a small canvas, I wanted to keep the brush strokes loose, colorful and energetic.  Today is day 25 in the 30 Painting in 30 Days Challenge.  Thanks for looking at this blog...if you have any questions or comments, contact Kay.  KMW

Horizon Series: Abstract #1027

Horizon Series: Abstract 1027
Oil on 22" x 30" Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This abstract went through alot of changes before it was completed. When I started it, I was using a totally different color scheme and did not know I was going in this direction. I applied layers and layers of color...there is alot of movement and depth in this abstract. I used both the brush and palette knife on this one. Lines, shapes, color and texture...it is all on this canvas. I really like this size canvas...it hangs well above a piece of furnture or tilted up against the wall, sitting on a table or cabinet. This contemporary abstract is on gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is needed. It is ready to hang! Thanks so much for viewing this blog. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing this painting. Have a great day! Contact Kay for more information.  KMW

Happy

Happy
18" x 18" Mixed Media
Contemporary Floral Abstract
Acrylic, paper, crayon on Birch Panel
Happy colors and texture make this panel interesting and fun.  I played with some new hand-made papers.  I was not sure that I would like the birch panel since I usually paint on canvas.  But I liked it and had fun with it.  I finished this and then started back with the oils.  This is Day 15 of the 30/30 Paint Challenge
I don't know where this little post about art began, but I saw it on Facebook, posted by a friend from High School.  I know that all of you artists out there will agree with it!  Happy Painting!  KMW

Today
14" x 11" Oil on Canvas

I used my palette knife all the way on this little panel.  I had the reds and oranges bouncing off the magenta/pink background.  The birdies on the wire are shades of gray.  I am thinking the abstract birds might be a possiblity for a large painting.  This is Day 10 of the 30 Paintings/30 Days Challenge.  Contact Kay for purchasing info.  Thanks for looking!  KMW

Bye, Bye Birdie

Bye, Bye, Birdie
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting
Yesterday I was playing around with some left-over paints and I wanted use my favorite palette knife (#24).  I had plenty of hot pinks, reds, cad orange, and cad yellow to start with.  There are three shades of Gamblin's Portland Greys....light, medium and dark....so had those to mix with some blues and violets for the birds.  I used some impasto for the thick applications so that it would dry faster.  This little 8" x 8" is my first birdie palette knife painting.  It was fun!  I had a great day yesterday, selling two paintings.  Contact ME for purchasing information.  This little panel would look great propped up on an easel.  This is day #8 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  Thanks, Kay

Out On A Limb

Out On A Limb
12" x 36" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Bird Painting by Kay Wyne
Hot off my easel....below you can see the progression as I placed the birds and limbs with a rough painting.  I wanted to placement to allow the viewer's eye to roam around and go from bird to bird.
Once I get the general placement of the subject matter on the canvas, I block in colors.  Using large brushes, I can cover lots of space quickly.
More color, not alot of details yet.  Layers and layers of oils go on....
More paint and more paint.  I wanted a colorful and painterly piece...more paint.
And More color...setting the eyes in the birds were some of the last touches.  More layers especially in the nest, but trying to stay loose with my strokes.
Thanks for looking at the art posted here....more painting tomorrow.  It is fun to go into the studio and paint whatever I am in the mood to paint!  These songbirds were colorful and something different for me.  There might be more bird paintings for the 30 Paintings/30 Days!  Kay

Red Dragonfly

Red Dragonfly
32" x 32" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
I painted all day yesterday---so much that my feet and knees hurt this morning.  I hope to finish and post the painting I am currently working on for tomorrow.  This painting was inspired after seeing a photograph that fellow artist and friend, Mark Malone took.  He had blown the image up and it was so neat!  I used one size palette knife on this canvas....the paint is built-up, giving it texture.  I had to stop a few times to let the paint dry, then go back into the paint layers of color.  I did not want to create mud!  This contemporary palette knife painting was so much fun to paint.  Contact Kay for more information. Thanks for looking...Kay

Lickety Split

Lickety Split
48" x 48" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Equine Art
With a few details to go, a few strokes here
and there....it could be completed today.
I want to work on the eyes, and have a
critique on it at the studio.  It is always
good to have some input from other
artists.  I wanted the horses to be bold,
energetic and colorful with lots of
movement and personality.  My
reference photos for this painting was
from three different sources/photos that
I took at different times and locations.  The
background and foreground has changed
from the initial composition.  More work
in the studio today, as I am starting a
new series for 2014!

Impulse

Impulse
18" x 18" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
I started this painting on impulse....just to throw
paint on the canvas after working on commissions
during the month of December.  My studio mates
have asked me what it is, and I honestly don't know.

One of my fellow artists said it looked like cactus,
another said flowers, and the one that makes
the most sense to me was the aerial view of
a golf course. I was working with Sharon's
piles of paint since they were going to go to
waste and dry up.  It felt good to just stand in
front of the easel and paint for the sake of
painting. The colors and shapes were put on
the canvas...hopefully to make an interesting
canvas that will bring a smile to your face!

This is painting #2 in the
I will be back in the studio today working
on painting #3!  Thanks, Kay

Forward

Forward
30" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Abstract Painting
Day 1 in the 30 Paintings/30 Days Challenge
This palette knife painting evolved with some wonderful
colors from Sharon's loaded palette.  She left town and I
couldn't leave the piles of paint sitting in the studio just to
dry up.  So I got my palette knife out and started scraping
her glass palette, putting the juicy oils on my canvas.
Since today is New Years, I titled it "Forward"....I am
looking forward to 2014.  This is also painting #1 in the
30 Day challenge.....Happy New Year!  Kay
